Growing up across the street from the White Plains Youth Bureau provided easy access to community and educational support at a young age. At 14, I secured my first paid job through the Youth Bureau as a math and English tutor. Years later, I had a very rewarding experience when I ran into one of my former tutees who told me that my influence led to her becoming a math teacher. This embodies the type of impact the White Plains Youth Bureau has on its community!
After graduating from White Plains High School, I attended North Carolina State University with a partial scholarship from the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Armed with a B.A. in English: Linguistics, Writing, and Rhetoric, I moved back to Westchester to work for an educational publisher. There, I edited math and science textbooks for middle and high school – some of which can be found at White Plains Middle School. Currently, I am an editor at a medical/science publisher in New Rochelle. After receiving my M.A. in English Literature from Mercy College, I took on the additional role of Managing Editor for Health Equity, a journal that provides authoritative information about health disparities and health equity among vulnerable populations. In addition, I frequently work as a freelance editor for independent authors.
I am proud to be a member of Bethel Baptist Church in White Plains and a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. My service leadership includes coordinating events for “Midnight Run” (feeding/clothing the homeless in NYC), volunteering at a local nursing home, and as an ACT-SO judge for Westchester. My hope for the future is to add “published author” to my list of accomplishments.
