Byron Smalls

Byron SmallsBryon Smalls

Byron started attending events sponsored at the Youth Bureau Teen Lounges as early as in his elementary school days. By the time he was in middle school he started his first job through Youth Employment continuing his relationship with the Youth Bureau through high school and undergrad. After receiving degrees from Norfolk State and SUNY Purchase, as well as a Masters, he worked in the private sector, before returning to White Plains to pursue a career in Education and Public Service. After several years working with the White Plains Board of Education, Byron returned to his roots and took on a full time position back at the Youth Bureau.
Byron has been recognized for his hard work with numerous awards, including the prestigious Joey Award for Outstanding Work for the Advancement of Youth Development; he was selected as 1 of 18 National After School Ambassadors for the United States, and honored by My Brother’s Keeper and Black Girls Rock for his work in the community. Byron has also served as President and Vice President of the Directors Network for the Child Care Council of Westchester, the Executive Board of the White Plains Board of Education Staff Development, the Harlem Renaissance Housing and the Boy Scouts of Westchester and Putnam New York. Byron is also a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
According to Byron, the Youth Bureau helped to guide him throughout his life preparing him for life’s obstacles and challenges as well as teaching him how to reach his goals. He is honored to be able to do the same for all the youth and families he now serves as Director of the After School Department.
