Building Trust Between Youth and Law Enforcement
The Youth & Police Initiative (YPI) is a collaborative community engagement program designed to build trust, strengthen relationships, and foster meaningful dialogue between young people and law enforcement. Through structured workshops, facilitated conversations, and shared experiences, YPI creates safe spaces where youth and police officers can openly discuss perceptions, challenges, and opportunities for partnership.
What is the Youth & Police Initiative?
Facilitated jointly by the White Plains Youth Bureau and White Plains Public Safety, the program brings together local youth and members of law enforcement to participate in guided activities focused on communication, empathy, conflict resolution, and mutual understanding. By addressing stereotypes and barriers that can contribute to mistrust, YPI helps humanize both youth and officers while promoting respect, accountability, and community connectedness.
The initiative empowers young people to share their voices and experiences, while giving officers valuable insight into the perspectives and needs of the youth they serve. Through this collaborative process, participants develop stronger interpersonal skills, increased civic awareness, and a shared commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive White Plains community.
YPI reflects the White Plains Youth Bureau’s commitment to positive youth development and prevention-focused programming, while supporting the White Plains Department of Public Safety’s dedication to community-centered policing and proactive relationship building.
